The University of California, Davis campus, originally known as the University Farm, was established by an act of the State Legislature in 1905. A committee appointed by the Regents purchased land near Davisville in 1906. The Regents officially took control of the property in September 1906 and constructed four buildings in 1907. John Edward Eckert was born on January 1, 1895 in Ohio. He received a B.S. in Agriculture (1916), an M.S. in Entomology (1917), and a PhD (1931) from Ohio State University. He began his career as an entomologist in North Carolina as a nursery inspector and then became Assistant Professor of Entomology (1919-1922) followed by Associate Professor of Entomology (1922-1924) at North Carolina State College.
